"[In Guatemala], there are at least thirty language divisions of Mayan speech, many of which are not mutually intelligible. Within these divisions are hundreds of dialects and village variants. Each division of speech has its own indigenous clothing style, handwoven on backstrap looms by the women of that village. Each dialect has a distinct weaving signature and method of wearing the clothing, which reveals where you are from, what language you speak, your marital status, your spiritual position, and so on, all without your speaking a word. For this reason, the Highland Maya classify themselves and their neighboring tribes by speech and by dress. Mayans feel that they wear their speech in their clothing. This is oddly very true, for when a village stops wearing its indigenous outfit, in almost every case it signals the final loss of the village's language as well."*
At Mayan Connection we believe that we all have the power to change the world for better. By recognizing that all of our actions have a long lasting impact, we strive to live and do business in ways that benefit all who are involved.
